Good news for Takiya

After four months of fighting, Takiya received some great news when she went to court this morning. The judge ruled in her favor to receive visitation and phone call rights to her 13-year-old daughter Tiannai.

It has been five years since she last saw her and she says, “It feels wonderful” to have her rights back. Takiya looks forward to being a parent to Tiannai, building a stronger bond with her and getting to know her much better. It means a lot to be there as a mother, a friend and support for her daughter.

In regards to Time for Change, Takiya says “they have given me better skills on how to cope with things in my life.” Now she is a better and stronger woman; she can handle situations better than how she would have handled them on her own. When she came to Time for Change she knew that she did not want to go back to the life that she came from and she refuses to end up back in the streets.

Takiya plans on becoming a productive citizen by maintaining a job and being able to have her own housing so she can build a better life for herself.

Jeanette reunites with her kids

A year before coming to Time for Change Jeanette got a CPS case and had her children taken away. After going through programs to fight to get them back she was on the verge of being homeless and struggling with drugs. With the desire to get on track and do better for her kids Jeanette found TFCF and after ten months with the Foundation she has been reunited with her children. “I was overjoyed and overwhelmed when they dropped my kids off,” she said. “I felt relieved, like my fight was over.”

Because of TFCF Jeanette has become a better person and a better parent. She attended all of the required classes that helped her to grow into the woman she is today. “It wasn’t easy in the beginning, but with hard work and effort I’ve been made into a new person and I have rebuilt who I was.” With the structure TFCF has she is now able to see things a lot clearer and is capable of staying on top of her priorities.

Now that she is in a healthy, happy place Jeanette says that her foundation is going to be her home. She has dreams of having a home of her own for her children and she desires to become an x-ray technician or go into the electrician field. “I don’t know where I would be if it weren’t for Time for Change,” she told us, “probably still looking for someone to help me, still homeless and on drugs.”

10th Year Anniversary Gala Success

Time for Change Foundation’s 10 Year Anniversary Gala was a remarkable evening to say the least. “It was a well put together event,” said Joseph Williams of Youth Action Project. “It was great; I am honored to have accepted the award.”

Youth Action Project received the Ramos Family Spirit of Compassion Award and was one of many to be honored at the Gala for their commitment to making a difference in the lives of homeless women and children.

Celebrating Life’s Precious Jewels and ten years of transforming the lives of over 500 homeless women and children the event also recognized current clients and alumni who have made their way to self-sufficiency.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication and perseverance of Time for Change Foundation and those who have generously given to the cause. We want to thank everyone who has made this evening and the last ten years possible.

B.A.S.I.A. National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Day

Time for Change Foundation had the pleasure to provide a presentation on HIV/AIDS at the Brothers and Sisters in Action (B.A.S.I.A.) National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Day gathering, “What’s Killing Us,” at the San Bernardino Community Hospital. Kim Carter, along with Yvette Rabon, presented “Keeping It Real,” an informational segment/PowerPoint discussing HIV/AIDS awareness, along with several other related topics. Several TFCF clients were present for this event.

Here at Time for Change Foundation we believe that everyone is deserving of a healthy and prosperous life. We offer many programs and services to women who desire to change the course of their lives to help them become active members of their community.

On top of the services that we offer to the women in our programs, Time for Change Foundation also offers community services in Financial Education and Money Management. These workshops include: Make your money work for you, how to buy your first home, repair your credit, and survive the recession.Our Advocacy for Change Leadership Center teaches you how to be a successful advocate, learn about the power and process of public policy, and lobbying versus advocacy.

It is important for the community to be aware, educated, and active in decisions being made in their community and how to influence change for the better.

The Greatest Achievement of All

Patty came to Time for Change Foundation in 2005 homeless, addicted to drugs, and unable to provide for her three children. With the resources, dedication and love given from Time for Change, Patty has made the complete transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency.

Excited and proud, Patty came to our offices with her Certificate of Achievement for working at her job for five years. Thanks to Time for Change Patty is able to say, yes, although she has made poor decisions in her life, making the decision to change and maintaining a positive lifestyle was the greatest achievement of all.

She has been inspired to get her life together so that she could be the healthy mother that her children deserve. TFCF believes that everyone is deserving of a home that is nurturing and supportive and that is exactly what Patty achieved.

There is Light at the end of the Tunnel

At 19 years old, along with my mom and dad, we became homeless. I was 8 months pregnant and we were living in a car. It was scary, and a lot of times I had to go without bathing or eating regularly. The day I went into labor, I remember thinking, “How can I have my newborn living in a car?” I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and once I saw her tiny little face, I knew that I would have to leave my parents and find somewhere for me and my daughter.

I was scared if I told someone they would call CPS and take my baby. I confided in another patient and she told me about Kim Carter, and gave me the number to Time for Change Foundation. Without any money or things for my 3 day old daughter, the program took us in.

At Time for Change Foundation, the case manager helped me identify some goals which included going back to school, getting a job, getting my own place, and learning how to be a good parent.

Six months later…I finished my GED and I’m currently attending United International College to become a medical biller. I have my self-esteem back and I’m now the proud parent of my 8 month old daughter Lauren.

When asked about her current goals, Milonna’s response was “I’m no longer waiting on government assistance; I am going to school to do better for myself.”

She also encourages other women facing homelessness and hopelessness by encouraging them to, “never give up- there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

Leadership and Development

Too often policies and laws are made without the input of the most affected and it is through our leadership and development program that we teach them to use their voice. Advocacy is the art of speaking up for one’s rights and having the ability to influence change.

Here at Time for Change Foundation, instead of being labeled as the problem, these women are taught how to analyze the political landscape, engage government at both local and state levels and use the power of their vote to impact the environment in which they live.

We tackle well-intended, but misguided laws that impact those who want to keep their families together, live in decent housing and enjoy the benefits of an improved quality of life. Civic engagement is key to a community’s health.

In addition, we are the San Bernardino Chapter of All of Us or None, an organization initiative that fights against post-incarceration discrimination. This national effort has been successful in removing institutional barriers to re-entry, and raising the voices of those most affected by punitive policies.

An opportunity to play, learn and grow

All it took was a smile to see the joy in five year old Anthony’s life. He sat freely and giggled as he watched his favorite movie “The Goonies.”

Anthony lives with his mother Selena at Time for Change Foundation’s Sweet Dreams home. Like many children his age Anthony likes playing with his toys and watching movies. “Everybody is nice,” he told us, regarding to the staff and other mothers and children at TFCF.

When Anthony came to Time for Change he had behavioral problems, with no stability in his life he had no proper teaching or discipline. After going through parenting, life-skill and anger management classes with his mother, he has grown immensely.

Thanks to Time for Change Anthony went from homelessness to having his own bed to sleep in at night. He now has the opportunity to play, learn, and grow in the community; a life that every child deserves.
